Characters and conversation

Set a scene for DarLink AI chat and roleplay

A roleplay starts when the characters have something to respond to. In DarLink AI chat, that can be a simple invitation, a disagreement or an unexpected problem. Choose an existing companion or make your own, then explain the scene without scripting the outcome.

Imagine two adult volunteers preparing a community film night. The screening is about to begin, but the film delivered is not the one advertised. One character knows the projection booth; the other is organizing the audience. They have a decision to make together.

Give each role a part in the problem

Put the essential scene information into a normal message: the place, who each person is and what has just happened. Include your response preferences there too. Use documented controls where relevant rather than inventing a special command to activate the story.

  1. Pick a companion whose premise can fit the scene you want.
  2. Describe the immediate problem, such as an unexpected film arriving before a community screening.
  3. Assign adult roles: the AI is the projectionist, and you are the volunteer greeting guests.
  4. Ask the character to leave your speech, actions and decisions unwritten.
  5. Invite a first move, such as explaining what the projectionist can tell from the film's label.

Write an opening that invites an answer

An opening could be: We are adult volunteers setting up a community film night. You are in charge of projection, and I am meeting the guests. The delivered film has a different title from the poster. Tell me what you notice and ask one question. Keep your reply brief and let me choose my own actions.

Your next message can add information or take the story in a direction. You might inspect the poster, suggest calling the supplier or ask whether the audience would accept a change. Let the characters discover the situation through exchanges instead of explaining every possibility at the start.

For a dungeon-master style exchange, try: Narrate a fantasy adventure for adult characters. I am a traveling mapmaker reaching a city gate after sunset. Describe what I notice and offer two approaches. Let me choose my own actions, and wait for my answer before continuing.

Conversational narration is different from automatic dice rolls or D&D rules enforcement. Check whether the chat offers any dice or character-sheet tools you need; otherwise manage those parts outside the conversation.

Keep the agreed facts easy to recover

If a reply describes an applauding audience before anyone has arrived, correct that point: the doors are still closed and the room is empty. Then continue with your next action. Naming the exact contradiction is more useful than a general request to improve the story.

Before ending a session, note the current scene, the latest decision and what is still unresolved. Use that summary when you return, and keep a copy of your own. A memory tier may support continuity, but it should not be your only record of a story.

Common questions

Can I use a directory character for DarLink roleplay?

Yes. You can begin with an existing companion rather than building one. Introduce roles that fit the character's premise, then describe the event that starts the exchange.

How can I keep control of my own character's actions?

State that the AI should write only its own role and leave your dialogue and decisions to you. If it crosses that boundary, identify the line and correct it. You may need to repeat the instruction.

Do roleplay scenes need a special command or format?

A plain-language message can establish the scene. Use special syntax only when the interface documents it; a hidden command is not needed to explain roles, boundaries or the pace you prefer.

What makes a useful summary for resuming a story?

Record where the characters are, what they last agreed on and which choice comes next. Include a detail only if it affects the next exchange, rather than pasting the entire history.

Should I rely on information a roleplay character gives me?

Treat the dialogue as fiction and check factual claims elsewhere. A character playing a doctor, lawyer or other specialist is not providing qualified professional advice.
